Herzing, Nichols Named AMCC Pitchers of the Week

ERIE, Pa. – Penn State Behrend baseball senior Jack Herzing (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Catholic) and softball junior AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) have been named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Pitchers of the Week, announced on Monday.

Herzing broke the Penn State Behrend school record for most career strikeouts, along with throwing a no-hitter against Hilbert. In the top of the fourth, the left-handed hurler sat down his 11th batter of the game to broke a new school record for the most strikeouts in his career, setting the new mark of 257 K's. He ended the game with 16 K's while only allowing one hit.

On the week, he struck out 31 batters and allowed just one hit in 14 innings of work. In game one against Hilbert, Herzing threw a no-hitter where he struck out 15 of the total 21 batters he faced, and retired the side himself on three separate occasions. On Friday, Herzing put on a strikeout clinic in a 7-0 win over Alfred State. He fanned the first nine batters he faced, and threw a no-hitter threw five innings.

Nichols went 4-0 in four appearances, throwing 24 innings and giving up one earned run for a 0.29 ERA. Her four wins also included two shut-out victories and one complete game. She only surrendered nine hits and struck out 24 during the 7-1 week for the Lions. Offensively, Nichols tallied 12 hits, two doubles, seven RBIs and scored 11 runs.
