Stara played soccer at Penn State Behrend.  The three-year starting goalkeeper set records for career shutouts, shutouts in a season and for fewest goals allowed.

Bill twice earned Regional All-American honors.  Twice Stara was named All-Conference.  The former captain was the starting keeper of the first team that earned post-season opportunities.  Twice in his playing career Stara had try-outs with professional soccer teams. 

Since graduating from Penn State in '79 Stara has been a high school coach in Maryland.  He has been named Maryland's High School Coach of the Year three years.  His teams have three state titles.
