What happens when you pair up some of the most athletic and talented volleyball players at Penn State Behrend from 2003-06? You get a dynamic duo created by Elaine Voltz and Lisa Wagner Robertson, who led the Lions to their first-ever AMCC Championship and NCAA Tournament bid in 2005.

Voltz was a three-time All-Conference first-team choice and two-time AMCC Player of the Year. She continues to hold the program record for kills (1,507) and hitting percentage (.315), while ranking second in career blocks (417). Wagner was a three-time All-AMCC selection and follows Voltz in career kills, ranking second with 1,199. She also ranks eighth in career digs, and is one of three players to tally over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in program history.

During their freshman season, Behrend posted a 17-17 overall record and an 8-4 mark in the conference to earn the No. 2 seed for the AMCC Championships. Voltz and Wagner made an immediate impact, recording 134 and 133 kills, respectively. Wagner tallied 180 digs and Voltz added 57 blocks to edge out her teammate for the squad’s Rookie of the Year.

The following year, both were selected to the All-AMCC team. Voltz earned a spot on the first team as a middle hitter and Wagner was voted to the second team as an outside hitter, helping the Lions advance to the AMCC Championship match. Voltz set the record for most kills in a season with 466 and was named Team MVP, while Wagner nearly tripled her kills from the year before with 382. She also registered 460 digs.

The two were unstoppable in a storied 2005 season. Behrend went undefeated in conference play with a 9-0 record to be named the AMCC regular-season champions. The Lions defeated Altoona 3-0 (30-19, 32-30, 30-26) to claim the program’s second AMCC title and advance to their first-ever NCAA Tournament. Despite falling to Gettysburg in the first round, Behrend finished with an astounding 26-8 record. Voltz led the conference in hitting percentage, while ranking second in kills and blocks to be named the AMCC Player of the Year. Wagner ranked fourth in digs and fifth in kills and joined Voltz on the All-AMCC first team.

To this day, the 2006 team holds the best record in program history with a 29-4 overall mark. The Lions made it back-to-back undefeated seasons in conference play, earning the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the AMCC Tournament. Falling short in the title match, Behrend went on to postseason play and finished runner-up in the ECAC Division III South Region Championships. Voltz was a repeat choice for AMCC Player of the Year and Team MVP, while being named to the All-Conference first team with Wagner once again.
