David Koerbel is the most heralded pitcher in the history of Penn State Behrend baseball. The two-time AMCC Pitcher of the Year and two-time ABCA All-Region Selection also earned ECAC Pitcher of the Year and Behrend Male Athlete of the Year in his senior year. Koerbel graduated as the career record holder in almost every pitching category.

He wasted little time adjusting to the college game, earning the AMCC Newcomer of the Year award after ranking fifth in the AMCC in ERA and finishing 5-0 on the season. Koerbel also tossed four complete games in just nine starts as a freshman while striking out 40. His sophomore season brought even greater expectations and the star pitcher delivered. Koerbel registered a 4-1 record with a 2.87 ERA while fanning 55. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and earned All-AMCC second-team honors.

The second half of his brilliant career changed the record books. Koerbel helped lead the Lions to a pair of AMCC titles. As a junior, he was named a CB Magazine “Player to Watch”, an ABCA Rawlings Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team member, the AMCC Pitcher of the Year, an ECAC Southern Region Second Team All-Star, and was also named the Most Valuable Player for the second time in as many seasons. He had an unblemished 5-0 record in the AMCC, tossing five complete games including two shutouts. Koerbel compiled an 8-2 overall record to go with a 2.82 ERA while striking out 73. His wins and strikeouts rank him second in program history in a single season.

Koerbel saved his best campaign for last, helping the Lions to yet another conference title. As a senior, he was named Behrend’s Male Athlete of the Year. Additionally, he was tabbed with his second AMCC Pitcher of the Year award. Koerbel also was named the ECAC Pitcher of the Year and an ABCA Rawlings Mid-Atlantic All Region Second Team selection. Statistically speaking, he finished 9-1 and recorded 83 K’s including a 13-strikeout performance in the AMCC semifinal game.

Koerbel graduated as the program leader in wins (27), innings pitched (238.2), strikeouts (251) and complete games (18). He set the program record for wins and strikeouts in a single season with nine and 83, respectively.
