Lions Split With Bethany

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Bethany on Saturday afternoon.  The Bison took game one 1-0 before the Lions got revenge with a 5-4 walk-off win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Behrend was unable to plate a run despite seven hits.  Bethany starting pitcher Brad Kubis earned the complete-game win with seven strong innings and eight strikeouts.

Matt Bittner (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) led the offense with a 2-for-3 day at the dish.

After suffering their first loss since April 18, the Lions' offense came alive in game two.  Ryan Kragnes (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) got Behrend on the board early after doubling to start the game.  The senior outfielder came around to score, putting the Lions up, 1-0.

The Bison took the lead in the second with two runs, but Behrend answered with three runs of their own.  Jordan Weinzierl (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) and Nate Liddle (DuBois, PA/DuBois) each drove in a run for the Lions before Behrend added a run on a Bethany error.

In the fourth and sixth, the Bison put single runs on the board to tie the game once again.  After the Lions were unable to score in the bottom of the sixth, Behrend walked off with the victory in the seventh.  The Lions loaded the bases with no outs for Bittner who came through with an RBI single to help Behrend earn the split.

Kragnes and Weinzierl each registered two hits for the Lions.  Chad Zurat (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) picked up the win with two innings of work out of the pen.

Behrend will be back on the diamond tomorrow against Washington and Jefferson at 1 p.m.
