FORT PIERCE, Fl. - Justin Foreman's (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) grand slam in the fifth inning gave Behrend their first lead of the day and helped the Penn State Behrend baseball team defeat Widener Tuesday, 14-12.
The Lions (2-5) had an explosive 10-run inning in the fifth that completely shifted the momentum of the game. Behrend found themselves down after the Pride (5-2) scored four first-inning runs to take an early lead.
With the top of the order up in the fifth, Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) got things going with a single. With one out, Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown), Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell), and David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton La-Salle) strung together three singles in a row. Bohman's single brought in Bergstrom while Boehme scored Sada, making the score 9-6 and bringing Foreman to the plate.
His bases-loaded blast gave the Lions their first lead of the day, making the score 10-9.
Behrend then capitalized on three Widener errors to score four more runs in the inning, making it a 14-9 ballgame.
The Pride added one more run in the sixth and two runs in the eighth, but it wasnt enough to overcome the Lions huge fifth inning.
Sam Riley (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) pitched 1 1/3 innings and was awarded the win, his first in a Behrend uniform.
Ben Ramey (Export, PA/Franklin Regional) pitched two strong innings in relief and Sada earned the save after striking out three of the six hitters he got out.
Boehme finished the day going 4-for-5 with three singles, a double and three RBIs.
Foreman went 3-for-5 from the dish while picking up four RBIs.
Sada finished with two hits and both him and Bohman recorded two RBIs.
The Lions will look to add a third straight win tomorrow when they take on Wilkes at 1 p.m.
