Fredonia Hangs On To I-90 Cup With 8-2 Win Over Baseball

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team battled Fredonia Wednesday afternoon, losing in a game cut short due to rain, 8-2. Today marks the fifth time the two teams have battled for the I-90 cup and Fredonia will hang on to the trophy until Monday when they meet again.

Fredonia struck first, platting four runs in the top of the second after a passed ball and a deep triple in the gap by center fielder, Joshua Crocetti. The Blue Devils then added one more run to their 4-0 lead in the fifth, making it a 5-0 ball game.

David Boehme got the Lions (15-15) offense going in the bottom of the fourth with a double to deep right center. Two batters later, Mason McGuire (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) doubled down the right-field line and then Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) drew a walk to load up the bases.

Behrend would only get one run in the inning after Boehme came in on a wild pitch.

After Fredonia expanded their lead to seven in the top of the fifth, Behrend struck for one more run in the following half inning. Kyle Lewis (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) sprinted out an infield single to get things going and Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) doubled to deep left center to bring around Lewis.

In the middle of the eighth inning, heavy rain caused the game to be called, making it a complete 7-inning game.

Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Sada both finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Lions will look to get back on the winning side of things when they move back into conference play this Saturday against Penn State Altoona beginning at 1 p.m. on the Behrend diamond.
