Behrend Takes Two Against Mt. Aloysius on Senior Day

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team picked up an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) sweep over Mt. Aloysius on Sunday afternoon, winning 10-3 and 11-4.

The Lions (21-14, 12-6 AMCC) exploded for 27 hits over the course of the day while holding the Mounties (9-24, 6-9 AMCC) to just over 10 over the two games.

Jack Herzing (St. Mary's, PA/Elk County Catholic) threw a gem on the mound in game one. The senior pitched a complete game two-hitter while striking out 14.

The Lions struck early in game one. David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle) and Braden Paulinellie (DuBois, PA/DuBois) notched RBIs in the first inning to make it a 2-0 ballgame at the end of the first.

Ben Ramey (Export, PA/Franklin Regional) and Holden Stevanus (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) helped Behrend extend their lead in the third. Ramey knocked a double to left field to bring Paulinellie and Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) in, who had previously reached from a single and a walk, respectively. Stevanus's single scored Murry and Ramey to make it 6-0. 

The Lions added four more runs in the sixth, while Mt. Aloysius scored two in the sixth followed by one in the seventh to end the game 10-3.

Ramey and Paulinellie each tallied three hits in the game and combined for five RBIs. Boehme went 2-for-4 with three RBIs himself.

In game two, the Lions recorded six runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. After scoring the first run of the game, the Mounties notched the next four runs over the course of the four innings to hold a 4-2 lead.

The sixth inning rally started when Mason McGuire (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) hit a single to the shortstop that scored Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) from third. Later in the inning, Boehme rang a double to right center field that scored both Ryan Hamm (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and McGuire.

The next batter, Paulinellie singled up the middle that cleared the bases, scoring both Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) and Boehme.

Ramey ended the scoring for the Lions in the inning with his RBI ground-out to the shortstop, making the score 8-4.

Behrend scored on a run in the seventh followed by two runs in the eighth to make the final score 11-4.

McGuire finished the game with a team-leading three RBIs after going 3-for-6 from the plate and scoring two runs.

Hamm and Sada both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Boehme and Foreman each batted 2-for-3.

Brandon Smail (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) got the win after going 6.0 innings and giving up just six hits and four runs while striking out three.

Behrend will be in action for the AMCC playoffs on Saturday, May 5. The time and opponent are to be announced.
