ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's basketball lost their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game to Medaille, 60-53 at the Junker Center, Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (12-5, 7-2 AMCC) were led by Tyler Steven's 16 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field while Ron Malicki and Angel Flores netted 11 and 10, respectively.
Chris Saltzman shot 50 percent from the floor registering 20 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to reach his first double-double of the season for the Lions (13-2, 8-1 AMCC).
Shane Skelly scored four of his six points in the first 10 minutes to help Behrend take a 16-4 advantage with 11:05 on the clock. Medaille battled back over the next four minutes, holding the Lions to only a free throw. The Mav's would then connect on back-to-back triples by Steven's and Steve Bryant to bring the game within a score, 17-15.
After a first half of runs, Behrend took a 26-24 lead going into the locker room.
Steven's hit another of his four triples to break a 35-all tie and gave Medaille its first lead of the second half, 38-35 (13:12).
A six-point game with 1:30 left in regulation, Chris Saltzman stepped to the line netting each of his two free-throw attempts to bring the Lions within four, 52-48, until Flores, on the ensuing play, dialed-up a triple to put the game away for the Maverick's.
Behrend lost its first game of the year to Medaille, now knotting the season series at one-a-piece with the away team winning each contest.
The Lions will travel to Altoona on Saturday night, the tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
