Lions Fall in Season Opener

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team fell to Centre 2-1 in overtime on Saturday morning in the opening game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament.

After battling the Colonels (1-0) to a 0-0 tie in the opening stanza, the Lions (0-1) got on the board first in the second half.

Michael Liebdzinski (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) led the ball into the box off a restart where Eric Hackworth (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) was able head it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Centre was able to answer quickly to tie the game at 1-all.  Just four minutes after the Behrend goal, Ryan Garvey came through with a goal for the Colonels off a corner kick.  Defense took over for the remaining 30 minutes, sending the game into overtime.

Garvey once again came up big for Centre.  The senior forward notched his second goal of the season 50 seconds into the first overtime to send the Colonels into the championship game.

Jarrod Wassell (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) made six saves in net, with five coming in the second half.

Behrend will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Geneseo in the consolation game.
