St. Vincent Squeezes By Behrend

LATROBE, Pa. – It came down to the final event. The St. Vincent men's swimming and diving team won the 200 free relay to post a five-point victory over Penn State Behrend 129.5-124.5 in non-conference swimming action on Saturday.

The Lions were able to place second and third in the relay, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bearcats.

Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) broke two records and tied another for Behrend. He won the 100 backstroke (52.53) breaking the St. Vincent pool record, while breaking his won record in the 50 back in his first leg of the 200 medley relay with a time of 23.24. He also touched first in the 200 back. Altemose, Simon, Everett Sargent (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) and Andrew J.N. Opalewski (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) made up the medley relay with a time of 1:39.51. In the relay, Simon tied his team record in the 50 free in the opening of the 200 free relay.

Clay Altemose (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) was a part of two winning events. He won the 100 butterfly (53.53) and also took second in the 200 butterfly (2:04.60) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay.

Sargent had sound individual performances later in the meet. He took second in the 50 free (22.59) and second in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.28).

Brian Mong (Franklin, PA/Franklin) also picked up a pair of second-place finishes. He was runner up in the 200 free (1:52.30) and in the 500 free (5:03.48).  

In the 200 IM, Eric Peirce (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) claimed second in 2:08.48 and Steve Torre (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) was third (2:09.35).

Justin Seeley (North East, PA/North East) led the Lions in the 1000 free (11:14.45) and Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) was a second behind for third (11:15.46).

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday, February 13 at the AMCC Championships.
