Lions Edge Allegheny; Kosts Sets New Pool Record

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team won seven events and finished second in another seven to defeat Allegheny 138-123 in non-conference action on Saturday at the Junker Center.

Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) and Nick Kost (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) each won two individual events for the Lions. Simon won the 100 backstroke (51.81) and the 100 freestyle. Kost touched first in the 200 backstroke (2:01.94) and the 400 IM with a winning time and new pool record of 4:20.07.

Swimming in the 100 breaststroke, Victory Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley) won with a time of 1:01.60 and Eric Matteson (Corry, PA/Corry) was third in 1:04.48. Matteson also had the fastest Behrend time in the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.25 for second place.

Nick Roth (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) led the Lions in three events. He won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.35. He also took second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.34) and 500 freestyle (5:06.88).

Ryan Mitcheltree (Moon Township, PA/Moon) clocked in at 10:51.66 in the 1000 free for second place and then came in third behind Roth in the 500 free (5:18.72).

In the 100 butterfly, Jacob Ekas (Erie, PA/McDowell) had the top Behrend finish with second place in 57.58. He also was third behind Simon in the 100 backstroke (56.50).

Ekas, Simon, Blair Carson (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) and Matt Myers (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) won the opening 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.65. Myers then finished second in the 50 free in 23.44.

Simon, Roth, Ekas and Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) took second in the final 400 free relay to hold off the Gators. The foursome combined for a time of 3:19.75.

Behrend returns to action in two weeks on Nov. 15 at Baldwin Wallace. Meet time is 1 p.m.
