Patterson Leads Lions Past Malone

ERIE, Pa. – Mark Patterson (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) won two individual and two relays to help the Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team past Malone 151-118 in non-conference action on Friday night.

Patterson won the 200 freestyle (1:48.28) and then got past Wesley Hammond of Malone in the 500 freestyle by .38 seconds with a time of 4:58.37 to win his second individual event. He also swam on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Liam Watterson (Brentwood, PA/Baldwin) picked up a pair of individual wins for the Lions. He paced the pack in the 50 backstroke with a winning time of 26.90 and again in the 100 backstroke (56.72).

Quinn Fischer (Fairview, PA/Cathedral Prep), Alex Croll (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) and Noah Babik (Penn Township, PA/Penn Trafford) were also individual winners on the night. Fischer clocked in at 22.67 to win the 50 freestyle, while Croll followed in the 100 freestyle with a winning time of 49.59. Babik trailed in the 100 breaststroke, touching in a first-place time of 1:01.62.

Croll also took second in the 50 butterfly in 25.14.

Steven Owens (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Blair Carson (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) led the way for the Lions in the 200 IM and the 50 breaststroke, respectively. Owens was second in 2:09.73 and Carson tallied a time of 29.92 in the breaststroke.

The first winning relay belonged to Patterson, Babik, Owens and Fischer in the 200 medley. The beat Malone by six seconds for first with a time of 1:40.88.

The second relay victory, in the 200 freestyle, was due to Patterson, Croll, Fischer and Dillon Scheidemantle (Mars, PA/Pine-Richland). The group tallied the fastest time in 1:30.22t to defeat six other lanes of competitors.

Diver Matthew Kuchcinski (North East, PA/North East) was second in the one-meter dive with a score of 222.50 and second in the three-meter dive (236.95).

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for senior day against St. Vincent. Meet time is 1 p.m.
