Men's Tennis Capture First AMCC Win

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team only surrendered one singles match to defeat Pitt-Greensburg 8-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday.

The Lions (7-7, 1-0 AMCC) made a statement in their first AMCC win of the season. Behrend started the match winning all three doubles. Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Scott Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) defeated Zachary Pivirotto and Doug Smeltzer at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.

Brenden Dollard (Pittsburgh, PA/Peters Township) and Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) were 8-4 winners at No. 2 doubles, while Noah Colvin (Warren, PA/Warren) and Michael Duckett (Girard, PA/Fairview) teamed up for an 8-3 decision at the No. 3 spot to sweep the doubles matches.

In singles action, Brett Palmer (North East, PA/North East) did not give up a match point to post a 6-0 6-0 victory over Terrance Madarish in the sixth spot.

Apgar, Russell, and Dollard were all double winners on the day for the Lions. Apgar won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2, and Russell posted the same score at No. 2. Dollard tallied a 6-3, 6-0 decision at third singles and Jeremy Burnheimer (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hiltop) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 5.

McFarland fell in a tiebreaker set at No. 4 singles. Jacob Chovanec won 7-6, 2-6, 13-11.

Behrend returns to action on Friday at Penn State Altoona. Match time is 6 p.m.
