Lions Finish Runners Up at AMCC Championships

ERIE, Pa. – The Franciscan men's tennis team posted a 5-0 decision over Penn State Behrend in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship on Sunday at the Westwood Racquet Club.

The Barons won their fifth title in a row, sweeping the doubles matches and then winning the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches to make it final.

Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Scott Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) fell to Jarek Sulak and John Gallagher at No. 1 doubles. The next win was by David Freytag and Jack Galla at No. 3 doubles. The pair tallied an 8-2 victory over Nick Kapty (Monongahela, PA/Ringgold) and Michael Duckett (Girard, PA/Fairview).

Brenden Dollard (Pittsburgh, PA/Peters Township) and Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) gave Richard Watson and Connor Jooste trouble at No. 2 doubles. Franciscan won 9-8 (7-2) in a tiebreaker to take a 3-0 lead into singles action.

Four singles matches were left unfinished after Jooste and Galla earned wins at No. 5 and 6, respectively.

The Lions will conclude their season on Tuesday against Thiel. Match time is 4 p.m.
