Men's Tennis Finishes Spring Break With Perfect Record

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team finished their spring break trip with an unblemished record, defeating Wartburg 5-4 in non-conference action on Friday afternoon in Myrtle Beach, South Caroline.

The win marks the fourth straight by the Lions (6-4) over break. Behrend won two doubles and three singles matches for the one-point difference and the win.

Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Scott Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) began the match with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, followed by an 8-5 decision by Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) and Brenden Dollard (Pittsburgh, PA/Peters Township) at No. 2 doubles for a 2-0 lead.

Wartburg got an 8-5 victory at third doubles to pull within one.

Behrend won the first three of the four singles to edge the Knights. Russell handled Sam Nettleten at second singles, 6-4, 6-2. Connor Barnard was a three-set winner over Apgar at No. 1, before Dollard and McFarland got wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Dollard tallied a 6-2, 7-5 decision and McFarland recorded a 7-6, 6-4 score to give the Lions a 5-2 lead.

Wartburg picked up the wins at No. 5 and 6 singles to complete the match.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday, March 17 against Otterbein. The match begins at 3:30 p.m.
