Behrend Places Second at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's track and field team competed at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet Saturday afternoon, placing second with a team score of 186.

Mitchell Obenrader (Fryburg, PA/North Clarion) had a record-breaking day for the Lions, winning the Javelin, discus and shot put. He got the day going with a 61.42 (201'6") meter throw in the Javelin, beating the next closest throw by almost 50 feet. He then went on to break the Carnegie Mellon facility record in the shot put with a 17.21 meter throw (56'5.75"). He finished the day with a 46.45 meter (152'5") throw in discus.

Luke Patten's (West Middlesex, PA/West Middlesex) vault of 4.88 meters (16'0") earned him first place in the pole vault.

Grant Rodgers (Oil City, PA/Oil City) placed first in the long jump after posting a distance of 6.31 meters (20'8.5"). He then took fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.69 meters (5'6.5").

Matthew Grafton (West Middlesex, PA/West Middlesex) and Marcus Haesler (North East, PA/North East) took second and third, respectively in the 110 meter hurdles with times of 16.12 and 16.33.

Devin Ross (Shenango, PA/Shenango) took first in the 400 meter run after posting a time of 51.37. He then took second in the 200 meter dash behind Rodgers.

Rodgers then teamed up with Kurt Eberhardt (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton), Patten, and Grafton in the 4x100 relay taking first with a time of 42.85.

Rodgers and Haesler took second and third place in the 100 meter dash, just .02 seconds apart. Rodgers had a time of 11.75 while Haeseler posted a time of 11.77 seconds. Rodgers took first in the 200 meter dash after sprinting to a time of 23.07.

Behrend also had multiple top-10 finishes in both the shot put and javelin.  Brian Hazel (Pittsburgh, PA/Keystone Oaks), Tony Antonucci (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny), and Zechariah Castillo (Erie, PA/Iriquois) placed in the shot put. Hazel was fifth with a 13.08-meter throw, Antonucci came in sixth after tossing 12.97 meters, and Castillo placed eighth after a toss of 12.16 meters.

Colby Tarr (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands) Ethan Rhodes (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing), and Kyle Grimm (Beaver, PA/Beaver Area) came in third, sixth, and eighth in the javelin, respectively. Tarr had a 44.63-meter throw, Rhodes finished with a 41.51-meter throw, and Grimm threw 36.10 meters.

The Lions had two top-five finishes in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Jarrod Lipsey (Kersey, PA/St. Mary's Area) and Aaron Peters (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) went three and four with times of 10:06.52 and 10:07.32, respectively.

Chris Drozynski (Stoneboro, PA/Lakeview) took fourth place in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:15.48. The Lions then placed seven through 12 to have seven of the top times in the race.

Eberhardt and Peters placed second and fourth, respectively, in the 400 meter hurdles.

The 4x400 team placed third out of six with a time of 3:34.44.

Behrend will be back in action Friday and Saturday when they compete in the Mount Union Invitational.
