Men's Volleyball Upends D'Youville in Five

BUFFALO, NY – Trenton Munk (Baden, PA/Ambridge) hit .500 behind 15 kills on 22 attempts and four errors, while making seven blocks to lead Penn State Behrend past D'Youville 3-2 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

The Lions (2-1) picked up their second win of the season in a five-set match over the Spartans (1-4). Behrend took the odd sets on the night, capturing the first 25-17, the third 25-22 and the fifth 15-8. D'Youville won the second 25-18 and narrowly in the fourth by a 25-23 score.

Ty Sheehan (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) led with 16 kills and committing one attack error. He also had a team-best three aces and added seven digs, three blocks and three assists.

D'Youville got 17 kills and 11 digs from Brock Tetreault for the double-double.

Behrend took control of the first set and let by as much as 10 points at 20-10. The next four out of five points for the Lions were on kills from Sheehan, Munk and Josh Oertly (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) for a seven-point victory.

After the Spartans evened the match,  Behrend rallied back from a three-point deficit early on in the third to tie it up at 17-all before taking the lead for good on the next point. Sheehan's kill put the Lions ahead 20-19 and his ace got them within set point. Eric Theiss (Plum, PA/Plum) knocked in the kill for a 25-22 win.

Behrend found itself trying to rally once again in the fourth, but D'Youville held on for a two-point win at 25-23.

The Lions put the Spartans away in the decisive set with a hitting line of (6-1-9), getting the final two kills from Oertly to be declared the winners.

Mitch Farabaugh (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) tallied 26 assists, eight digs and four kills. Derek Polishen (Plum, PA/Plum) recorded a team-best 13 digs. Theiss had double-digit digs with 11 and added seven kills.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday in a tri-match at Wells, beginning at 6 p.m.
