Medaille Sweeps Lions in AMCC Action

ERIE, Pa. – David Riggsby registered 39 assists, eight digs and four kills to lead Medaille past Penn State Behrend 3-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Thursday evening.  

The Mavericks (6-10, 2-1 AMCC) posted their seventh straight win over the Lions (6-6, 4-1 AMCC) with a 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20 three-set victory. Calvin Crosby led Medaille with 10 kills and David Hill added nine.

Eric Theiss (Plum, PA/Plum) tallied a team-best 10 kills, hitting .348, while Josh Oertly (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) recorded nine kills and two blocks for Behrend.

Record shows the matches between these two teams are a battle to the end. This one was no different. In the first set the Mavericks held a seven-point lead at 16-9, but the Lions came back to make it a two-point game at 18-16. A pair of Crosby kills and one from David Hill gave Medaille a 25-21 win.

With the Mavericks holding a 21-16 lead in set two, the teams exchanged kill for kill with no errors to finish out the game. Hill knocked in three in a row and Oertly got a pair of kills during the error-free run. Crosby had the final say with his fourth kill of the set for game point at 25-20.

Behrend tried to push the game in a five-set match by taking a lead late in the third set. At 17-16 with the Lions in front, Medaille went on a 9-3 run to finish the match. The Mavericks forced our errors and Jack Hagerty earned two kills for a 25-20 third-set win.

Mitch Farabaugh (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) set 26 assists and Derek Polishen (Plum, PA/Plum) led with seven digs.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday in a tri-match at Elmira. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
