D'Youville Edges Men's Volleyball in Five

BUFFALO, NY – Brock Tetreault recorded a match-high 26 kills and 12 digs to lead D'Youville past Penn State Behrend 3-2 in men's volleyball Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Tuesday night.

The Spartans (8-12) earned the conference victory by taking the Lions (4-13) in five sets, including three that extra-point sets starting with the first. D'Youville won 27-25 and 25-22 for a 2-0 lead, before Behrend came back to tie it with 26-24 and 25-22 decisions in the next two sets. The Spartans went on to win the thrilling fifth set, 23-21.

The Lions had four players who tallied 13 kills apiece. Tyler Herrmann (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) posted a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.

Behrend rallied down two sets to win the next two and forth a decisive set.  Down by four in the third, the Lions took advantage of four straight errors combined with a kill from Anthony Sprentz (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and an ace from Josh Oertly (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) to regain a lead at 19-17.

D'Youville relied on a few Behrend errors to go ahead 24-23, but blocks by Joey Reynolds (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) and Oertly prevented the match point. A Tetreault attack error and a kill from Eric Theiss (Plum, PA/Plum) kept the Lions alive at 26-24.

In the fourth, Behrend held a six-point lead late in the set and got two kills from Trenton Munk (Baden, PA/Ambridge) to even the match with a 25-22 win.

There was no surprise to see the fifth set mimic the previous four with each team going point-for-point. The Lions had match point four times but the Spartans responded every time with a kill. D'Youville's final kill by Chris Busha made it 22-21 and a block from him and Loos sealed the victory, 23-21.

Oertly, Munk and Theiss registered 13 kills, while Reynolds posted a season-best nine blocks.

Behrend returns to action on Thursday at Thiel. Match begins at 7 p.m.
