ERIE, Pa. – Penn State Behrend men's volleyball graduate student JP Goodsel (Corry, PA/Corry) has been named the 2022 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Player of the Year and head coach Phil Pisano garnered Coach of the Year honors to highlight the All-Conference Team.
Goodsel is earning his first Player of the Year honors for the Lions, while Pisano was chosen Coach of the Year for a fourth time since the inception of the program in 2012. Goodsel was named to the first team along with senior middle hitter Cody Schnur (Butler, PA/Butler) and junior libero Adrian Martinez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Wesleyan Academy). Sophomore Owen Wienczkowski (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) was selected to the second team.
Goodsel, team captain, is a two-time All-AMCC selection, being named to the second team in 2020 and first team in 2022. Goodsel is second in the conference in kills per set (3.50) and is fifth in overall kills with 301. He is also fourth in digs per set (2.48) and service aces per set (0.38). The graduate student posted double-digit kills in 18 matches this season, knocking down a career-high 26 kills in a 3-1 win over Penn State Altoona. Goodsel was named to the AMCC All-Tournament Team for posting back-to-back double-doubles in the conference championships. He registered a season-best five blocks on two occasions. Goodsel is also a five-time Academic All-AMCC choice.
Schnur lands on the first team to complete his career. The senior team captain was also a two-time All-AMCC second choice (2020, 2021). Schnur leads the AMCC in blocks per set (0.87) and is second in attack percentage (.388). He registered a block or more in all but three matches, knocking down a season-high six on two occasions. Schnur had double-digit kills in nine matches, recording a season-best 16 against Geneva in the AMCC championship match.
Martinez, Behrend's primary passer, repeats on the first team from a year ago. He not only leads the conference, but he is also first in NCAA Division III statistics in digs per set with 3.32. Martinez has played in every match and had double-digit digs in 20 matches this season. The junior has 329 digs and registered a career-high 22 digs against Geneva during the regular season.
Wienczkowski was selected to the second team for his first All-Conference honors. The sophomore ranks first in the AMCC in attack percentage (.449) and is fourth in blocks per set (0.79). Wienczkowski is tied with Schnur for most blocks with 78 and is third on the team with 187 kills. He tallied double-digit kills in six matches, posting a career-high 15 against Penn State Altoona. Wienczkowski also had a career-high seven blocks vs. Thiel.
