Softball Falls to La Roche; Game Two Suspended

PITTSBURGH, Pa. –  The La Roche softball team captured game one of a doubleheader against Penn State Behrend, 4-1, while game two was suspended in the fourth inning with the Lions holding a 3-0 lead over the Redhawks in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate College (AMCC) action on Tuesday.

Amanda Varhula led La Roche  (14-13, 10-3 AMCC) with two hits, including an RBI single that put the Redhawks ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kara Jo Egelsky went the distance, giving up five hits and one run.

Samantha Grismore went 1-for-2 and Julie Heinl suffered the loss on the hill after pitching six innings striking out three for Behrend (11-13, 8-7 AMCC).

La Roche took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, but the Lions evened the score on the next chance at bat. Grismore walked and got to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Gruber, before touching home on a single by Kayla Miller.

The Redhawks plated three runs in the fifth thanks to Varhula and Ashley Baron's triple with one out for the final margin, 4-1.

Behrend stranded six runs in game one and La Roche left eight on base.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Medaille. The AMCC doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
