La Roche Eliminates Behrend From AMCC Tournament

CRESSON, Pa. – The La Roche softball team eliminated Penn State Behrend from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate College (AMCC) tournament with a 5-0 win on Saturday morning held at Mt. Aloysius.

The Redhawks (17-17) stayed alive in the championships, making the most of their hits with six to score five runs and shut out the Lions (15-17). Kara Jo Egelsky only gave up four hit with no runs in seven innings to earn her 10th win. Ashley Baron went 2-for-3 from the plate, including a triple and one run for La Roche.

Hurler Julie Heinl allowed two earned runs, walked three and struck out two for the loss, while leading the offense with a 2-for-3 showing.

What started as a pitcher's dual, turned out in favor of the Redhawks, beginning in the second inning. Baron led off with a triple to set herself up in scoring position. Sydnie Martin singled to push Baron across home plate. Martin then scored on Amber Steenbeke's double to left field for a 2-0 lead.

Four errors in the sixth cost Behrend three runs to give La Roche a 5-0 lead that would stand. The Redhawks made three easy outs to secure the win in the seventh.

The Lions will wait to hear if they receive a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
