Lions Sweep La Roche; Win AMCC Regular Season

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team swept La Roche on Friday afternoon.  With the two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) victories, the Lions will now host the AMCC post season tournament.

In game one, the Behrend bats came alive for nine runs on 13 hits to cruise by the Redhawks, 9-3.

The Lions (23-13) jumped out in the second with four runs.  Samantha Grismore (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy & Central) left the yard for her second home run of the season for the first two runs.  Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) hit an RBI triple in the inning and suddenly Behrend was up, 4-0.

La Roche answered with three in the top of the third to get back in the game.  However, the Lions scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to take control.  Amy Greene (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) and Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) both drove in runs in the fifth.

Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) went the distance for Behrend to pick up the win.

Heading into the second game, the Lions were one win away from winning the AMCC regular season title.  After three innings of play, Behrend held a 6-1 lead, but the Redhawks had a huge fourth inning.  La Roche pushed across seven runs to take the lead.

Behrend tied the game at 8-all with two runs in the fifth.  With the game still tied, the Lions made good use of their final at bats.  After Kayla Miller (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) singled to get the inning going, Sherrieb once again tripled to drive in the winning run.

The Lions will be back in action on Friday in the AMCC tournament.  The schedule of every game will be available later this week.
