Lions Advance; Knock Off Mt. Aloysius

ERIE, Pa. – In their opening game of the 2012 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament, the Penn State Behrend softball team defeated Mt. Aloysius 5-1 on Friday afternoon.

The Lions (24-13) capitalized on a few Mt. Aloysius mistakes to score four runs in the third.

After falling behind 1-0 after two and half innings, Behrend found some life.  Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) and Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) each got on base to start the inning.  With two on and no one out, Ashley Gruber (Burton, OH/Berkshire) laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases.

With Amy Greene (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) standing at the plate, the Lions scored two runs without a swing of the bat.  Fuller slid in safely on a passed ball and Heinl scored on a wild pitch.  Following a Greene walk, Callie Markovich (Edinboro, PA/Northwestern) singled to push across Behrend's third run of the inning.  The Lions scored another on a throwing error and were up 4-1 heading into the fourth.

That was all that Heinl needed in the circle.  The junior went the distance, allowing just one run while striking out eight.

Markovich led the way with two hits and two RBIs for the Lions.  Greene chipped in two hits as well.

Behrend will be back in action tomorrow.  The Lions will face Penn State Altoona at approximately 3 p.m. at the Behrend diamond.
