Lions Eliminated From NCAA Tournament

ALMA, Mich. - The Penn State Behrend softball team lost to Denison 5-4 in the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Lions (26-15) held a 4-2 lead in the seventh, but the Big Red put up three in their final at bats to squeak by Behrend.

In the third, the Lions took a brief 1-0 lead.  Amy Greene (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) hit an RBI single to plate the run.  However, Denison answered with one of their own in the bottom half.

The Behrend bats came alive in the sixth with three runs.  Shana Merkle (Corry, PA/Corry) and Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) each had an RBI single.  An illegal pitch pushed across the third run for the Lions.  With just six outs to get, Behrend held a 4-2 lead.

Denison was not going quietly though.  The Big Red stunned the Lions with four straight one-out singles to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh and earn the victory.

Greene led Behrend with four hits in four at bats with one RBI.
