Lions Edge Ursinus; Softball Falls to Elizabethtown

CLERMONT, Fl. – Katie Gozzard (Pittsburgh, PA/Deer Lakes) had the eventual game-winning RBI single in the top of the fourth to help the Penn State Behrend softball team defeat Ursinus 2-1 on the second day of their spring break trip on Monday morning.  

The Lions (3-1) fell in the nightcap to Elizabethtown 6-0 for their first loss of the season.

In the opener, Behrend tallied two runs on eight hits for its third straight win.  Carson Hauser (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy) went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and Jillian Williams (Corry, PA/Corry) pitched all seven innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run for the win in the circle.

The Lions got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Kristen Kargol (Saegertown, PA/Cambridge Springs) singled and then Angela Dale (Clinton, PA/West Allegheny) pinch ran. Dale advanced to second on the first out and then scored on a double to left field by Kaylene Chaffee (Venango, PA/Cambridge Springs) for a 1-0 lead.

Behrend made it 2-0 after the fourth frame. Angela Sullivan (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) got on base with a single with two outs showing. Hauser singled and Gozzard followed with a hit to left field to score Sullivan for a two-run advantage.

The Bears (0-3) added a run in the sixth but the Lions defense held them scoreless in the seventh for the win.

In game two, the Blue Jays tallied six runs on eight hits. Elizabethtown struck in the second for two runs and four in the third. Behrend got its lone hit from Lauren Olevnik (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights). Brittney Williams (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) started the game in the circle and got the loss with five runs on four hits in two innings of work.

The Lions return to action tomorrow morning against Wartburg and Monmouth.
