Softball Blanks Dominican; Falls To Carthage

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Penn State Behrend softball team scored eight runs on 11 hits to defeat Dominican (Ill.) 8-0 in five innings, while falling 3-0 to Carthage in non-conference action at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.

In the nightcap, Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) and Kristen Kargol (Saegertown, PA/Cambridge Springs) each tallied three hits while AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) pitched the shortened game only allowing one hit and striking out five for her third win of the season.

In her three hits, Kargol smacked a double and triple for four RBIs. The Lions (5-4) got one hit in the first inning before exploding for four hits and three runs in the second frame. Katie Gozzard (Pittsburgh, PA/Deer Lakes) started with a single to third base and advanced to second with a hit from Bupp.

Kargol ripped her triple down the right-field line to bring home Bupp and Gozzard. Kaylene Chaffee (Venango, PA/Cambridge Springs) drove in Kargol with a single to make it 3-0 after the second.

Behrend plated two more runs in the third. With two outs, Kargol got her second extra-base hit with a double to right field to get in Bupp and Gozzard for a 5-0 margin.

The Lions ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, adding three more runs for the eight-run rule.

In the opener against Carthage, Stefanie Guerico threw a four-hit shutout and fanned seven batters to help Red Ladies (4-6) get the win.

Carthage scored three unearned runs on three hits. Behrend managed four hits but could not get any across the plate. Britany Williams (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) pitched the six innings and struck out six while throwing 63 strikes for the loss.

The Lions return to action tomorrow for their final day of competition on spring break against Rensselaer and Nebraska Wesleyan.
