Bupp Helps Lions Sweep Alfred

ALFRED, NY – Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) went 5-for-7 with four RBIs while registering two saves to help the Penn State Behrend softball team sweep Alfred by identical 6-3 scores in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Bupp went a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run to record three RBIs in game one. She came in relief for AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) for the final two innings for the save. Bupp then added a 2-for-4 performance with a double and her fourth save of the season for the Lions (22-8).

Carson Hauser (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy) also added three hits, including a double, to go with a pair of runs in the opener. Hauser got Behrend on the board in the first inning off an error, before Bupp tripled and knocked in Mackenzie McIntire (Stoneboro, PA/Lakeiew) for a quick 2-0 lead.

The lead grew by two runs off doubles from Hauser and McIntire.

The Saxons (16-10) cut the deficit by two with a pair of runs in the fourth. With a small 4-3 lead after the fifth, Bupp smacked her first home run of the season to give Behrend two more runs in the seventh for the final three-run margin.

Nichols scored in the seventh and is credited with the win, striking out eight of the 23 batters faced in five innings of work.

In game two, four different players registered a pair of hits while Brittney Williams  (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) earned her fifth win in the circle. She gave up three runs on six hits.

The first two runs in the top of the first inning for the Lions were off doubles by Nichols and Bupp. Alfred made it 2-1 in the bottom of the frame with a ground-out RBI single by Haley Powers.

Kendra Schreck (Emlenton, PA/Cranberry) scored on a single by Hauser in the second to make it 3-1 but the Saxons knotted the game at 3-all with a home run in the third.

The final three runs belonged to the Lions. In the fifth, Lauren Wentz (Grove City, PA/Grove City) drove in Bupp with a double to left center for the eventual game-winning run. Schreck then singled to score Wentz for a 5-3 edge. The run in the seventh was scored by McIntire off a throwing error for a 6-3 final.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Mt. Aloysius. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
