Lions Stay Alive in AMCC Tournament with Extra Inning Win Over D'Youville

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team won two games in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) tournament on Saturday to stay alive. The Lions first took down Penn State Altoona, 9-0 before beating D'Youville 2-1 in extra innings. Behrend will continue their play tomorrow to take on Franciscan in an elimination game. To win the AMCC title, the Lions will have to Franciscan and take down Mt. Aloysius twice in three straight games.

Game Two:
* In the bottom of the eighth inning with Carson Hauser (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy) on third base, AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) bunted one to the ground to win the game
* The Spartans had intended to walk Nichols, but she stepped to reach for the bunt to surprise D'Youville and bring Hauser home
* The Lions started the game with a 1-0 lead in the first before the Spartans answered with one in the top of the second
* The game remained at a stalemate until the Lions scored the winning run in the eighth inning
* Brittney Williams (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) pitched five innings for Behrend before Nichols finished the last three, registering her 17th win of the season
* Nichols struck out five of ten batters faced
* Hauser had three stolen bases in game two along with three hits and both runs, leading the team
* Nichols tallied both RBIs for the Lions

Game One:

* Before taking on D'Youville, Behrend had to face Penn State Altoona in the first game of the losers bracket
* The Lions won 9-0 in five innings
* Nichols pitched a one-hitter shutout for Behrend, her third shut out of the season
* Behrend had three triples in game one, one each from Katie Gozzard (Pittsburgh, PA/Deer Lakes), Kristen Kargol (Saegertown, PA/Cambridge Springs) and Kylee Bundy (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area)
* Gozzard had both a triple and double in game one, along with tallying an RBI
* Kargol did the same with one triple, one double, two RBIs, and one run
* Alayna Derzak (Seven Fields, PA/Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic) and Bundy each chipped in two RBIs

* No. 1 Penn State Behrend will take on No. 4 Franciscan at 9 a.m. tomorrow. To win the AMCC title, the Lions will have to Franciscan and take down Mt. Aloysius twice in three straight games.
