Marietta Softball Holds Off Behrend Lions

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta Pioneers took two games from the Penn State Behrend softball team in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers won 8-0 in five innings and 12-10 in walk-off fashion in the nightcap.

Game One: Marietta 8, Penn State Behrend 0 (5)
Records: Penn State Behrend (16-12), Marietta (13-20)

Key Moments:

* Ashton Helmke threw a two-hit shutout for the Pioneers 
* Marietta scored seven of its eight runs off home runs
* The Pioneers smacked three home runs on the day in different innings
* Jess Brown led Marietta with a pair of long balls
* Nadia Bongiorni (Avella, PA/Avella) and Ashleigh Schmidt (Sarver, PA/Freeport) each tallied a hit for the Lions
* Schmidt suffered the loss in the circle, facing 13 batters before making way for reliever Maria Jones (Wilcox, PA/Johnsonburg)
* The Pioneers snapped Behrend's six-game winning streak

Game Two: Marietta 12, Penn State Behrend 10

* The Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep
* With the game tied at 10-all, Kylie Daugherty hit a walk-off home run to score two runs for the win
* Marietta had five extra-base hits out of 14 total, including two more home runs 
Jocelyn McNany (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and Cami McNany (Emlenton, PA/Allegheny-Clarion Valley) each tallied two hits for the Lions
* Behrend grabbed a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the third inning
* The Pioneers scored seven unanswered runs to make it 8-2
* The Lions had a seven-run sixth inning to regain the lead at 10-8
* Behrend scored six runs facing two outs but with bases loaded in the sixth
* Schmidt and Jones had RBI singles, while C. McNany ripped a double to score three runs for a two-run edge
* The Lions went through three pitchers: Jones, Alaina Wyckoff (Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) and Kayla Lindberg (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) 
* Lindberg was the final hurler and recorded the loss in the last 1.2 innings pitched
