WILMINGTON, Ohio – Ally Burke (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) scored nearly half of the Penn State Behrend women's basketball team's points with a career-high 33, but the Lions fell to Wilmington 82-67 in the opening round of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament on Friday evening.
Brittany Kiger (White Oak, PA/McKeesport) added her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Burke went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe in the Lions (0-4) fourth game of the year.
With the win, the Quakers (3-0) remain undefeated on the season thanks to a team-high 18 points from Mary Moyer on 9-for-16 shooting from the field. As a team, Wilmington shot 45.6 percent from the floor and had 12 different players score.
Behrend put the pressure on the Quakers in the first half, only trailing by one point at 14-13 at the 12:21 mark. A quick 5-0 run by Wilmington put them up 19-13, but a Kiger layup and an Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) three pointer got it back within one at, 19-18.
The Quakers answered with a 10-0 spurt for a 29-18 lead with 6:02 left to play before halftime. The Lions drained back-to-back triples by Woll and Burke to pull within three at 29-26, but Wilmington shot 2-for-3 from the floor and got a pair of free throws by Kirsten Glick to take a 39-26 lead into the locker rooms.
The Quakers kept a steady lead in the second half and although Behrend managed to make it a seven-point game early on, Wilmington regained a double-digit lead and held on for the win.
Behrend will face Alma tomorrow in the consolation game, beginning at 1 p.m.
