Fredonia Edges Lions in Fourth Quarter

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Jacque Law scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Fredonia women's basketball team past Penn State Behrend 65-57 in the second game of the Greg Richards '08 Memorial Classic, presented by Marquette Savings Bank hosted by Allegheny on Saturday.

Law went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in the final period to erase a one-point deficit to help the Blue Devils (1-1) collect their first win of the season. In addition to Law, Jenna Einink and Alisha Szumigala were in double-figure scoring with 19 and 12 points, respectively.

The Lion (0-2)  also had three players in double figures led by Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and Autumn Byes (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) with 17 points apiece.

Behrend led majority of the first quarter until the final 39 seconds. With the score tied at 14-all, Emily Lasher hit the front end of two free throws and then a layup with time expiring put the Blue Devils in front 17-14.

In the second quarter, five straight points from Woll gave the Lions a 24-23 lead. A layup from Nicole Boyer and two free throws from Emily Kinecki (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) pushed the lead to 28-23. Fredonia scored the final six points for a one-point lead at halftime, 29-28.

The third quarter was just as close at the first two. One point separated the two teams even until the end of the 10 minutes with Woll draining a pair of free throws to give Behrend a 44-43 edge.

Law made the first basket of the fourth quarter and then was nearly perfect from the charity stripe to keep Fredonia in the lead for good.

Byes added six rebounds and five steals for Behrend.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday at Wooster. Game time is 7 p.m.
