Women's Basketball Earns First Win; Lions Down Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) and Emily Kinecki (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) each recorded career highs in points with 27 and 23, respectively, to lead the Penn State Behrend women's basketball team past Wooster 88-71 in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

The Lions (1-2) outscored the Fighting Scots (2-2) 48-27 in the final two quarters to erase a four-point deficit from the first two quarters to earn their first win of the season. Woll went 8-for-15 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. The senior also added seven steals, six assists, three rebounds and one block. In addition to 23 points, Kinecki added seven rebounds and three steals.

Behrend had two more players in double-figure scoring in the win. Kourtney Beamesderfer (Rebersburg, PA/Penn Valley) and Amanda Byes (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) each chipped in with 13 points. Byes grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

Wooster was led by Maria Janasko's 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Fighting Scots turned their four-point halftime lead into seven at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter after a free-throw from Anna Gibbs. From there, the Lions went on a 19-7 run to take the lead heading into the final quarter.

Wooster scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to regain the lead at 64-61. The Fighting Scots held Behrend scoreless for the first 3:39 before Byes knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 64-63. Nicole Boyer (Blairsville, PA/Blairsville) hit the go-ahead jumper at the 5:38 mark to put the Lions up for good.

In the final minute, Behrend went 12-for-13 from the free-throw line, including Woll going 6-for-6 to help secure the victory.

The Lions return to action on Sunday against Adrian in their home opener. Game time is 2 p.m.
