Lions Fall to St. Mary's

ST. MARYS, Md. – Koby Chaney had a double-double with 20 points and 18 rebounds to lead St. Mary's (MD) past Penn State Behrend 73-60 in non-conference women's basketball action on Friday afternoon.

Chaney led three other starters in double-figure scoring to help the Seahawks (4-6) post their last win of 2017. The Lions (4-7) only fell short by a few points in each quarter except the third (5) to keep them in reach the entire game.

Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) led Behrend with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. She also added four assists and three steals. Emily Kinecki (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) added 12 points and Autumn Byes (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) tallied 10 points, while each registered seven rebounds.

Behrend held a three-point lead with 2:21 left in the first quarter at 13-10 but St. Mary's went on a 7-2 run to end the period with a 17-15 edge.

The second period was as close as the first until the 3:32 mark where the Seahawks had an unconventional three-point play to take their biggest lead of the half at 30-24.

With a five-point lead at halftime, St. Mary's quickly turned it into a 12-point game with seven straight points to start the third quarter. Behrend cut the lead to five with a Kinecki layup at 5:57 to make it 42-37. The Seahawks responded with nine consecutive points to regain the double-digit lead at 51-37.

The Lions got within six points in the fourth quarter but could not regain the lead they once had in the first quarter.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday at Medaille in AMCC action. Game time is 8 p.m.
