Spartans Hold Off Women's Basketball

BUFFALO, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team shot 61 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 12-point halftime lead and never look back to defeat Penn State Behrend 74-69 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Wednesday night. 

With four players in double figures, the Spartans (5-12, 4-6 AMCC) were able to sweep the Lions (7-11, 5-6 AMCC) during the regular season for their sixth win against Behrend since the all-time series began. 

D'Youville was led by Monica June with 16 points and Darin Evans tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. 

Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) had a team-best 23 points on 10-for-18 shooting with eight assists and six steals, while Kourtney Beamesderfer (Rebersburg, PA/Penns Valley) a season-high 18 points behind a game-high four three pointers. 

June tallied all of her points in the first half to get the Spartans a comfortable lead and secure the conference win. 

In addition to shooting well, D'Youville held a 33-17 advantage in defensive rebounds alone and finished with a 47-33 margin. 

Behrend, down by 20 points in the third quarter, saved its best for last. The Lions held the Spartans to just 10 points in the fourth quarter while scoring a game-best 25 points to make the deficit by five points at the end. 

Woll had eight points and Ally Dillman (Erie, PA/McDowell) got all six points in the final period to help Behrend put pressure on D'Youville down the stretch. 

The Lions return to action on Saturday against Mt. Aloysius. Game time is 6 p.m.
