FREDONIA, NY – Ellen Coleman posted two goals and an assist to lead Rochester past the Penn State Behrend women’s soccer team 5-1 in the first round of the Clarion Hotel Classic hosted by SUNY Fredonia this weekend.

The Yellowjackets scored their first two goals six minutes apart in the first half and netted three more in the second, holding a 29-9 shot advantage for the impressive win in non-conference action.

Senior Caitlyn Elser tallied her first goal of the season and the Lions’ (2-2) only marker on the day, while Robin Siegenthaler recorded a season-high 12 saves.

Coleman opened the scoring in the 17th minute with an unassisted goal and Bridgette Varin took a one-touch shot off a pass into the box from Jayne Gavrity six minutes later for an early 2-0 lead.

A 3-0 Yellowjackets lead came 2:34 into the second half when Kirsten Ross scored on an assist from Coleman. Elser was able to get Behrend up on the scoreboard at the 55:38 mark thanks to an assist by Lindsey Steinsdoerfer, but that was the last scoring threat for the Lions.

In the final 10 minutes, Coleman struck again and Brittany Huber found the back of the net, both assists belonged to Grace Van Der Ven.

Yellowjacket’s goalie Bridget Lang made two saves in the win.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Fredonia in the second round of the classic. Game time is 7 p.m.
