Lions Down Altoona on Senior Day

ERIE, Pa. – Valerie Wagner (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) had a hand in both goals to lift the Penn State Behrend women's soccer team over Penn State Altoona 2-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (9-8, 7-1 AMCC) defeated Altoona Lions (3-15, 3-7 AMCC) for the first time in the regular season since 2008, putting themselves one win away from winning the regular-season championship and earn the top-seed in the AMCC Tournament.

Emily Foy (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg) scored her second straight goal of the week to put Behrend on the scoreboard first. Foy, who netted the game winner against Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday, was quick to beat the Lions defender on a ball played by Wagner and finished her shot from about 15 yards out for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the game.

Three minutes later, Wagner tallied the second goal of the game off a pass from Melissa Huff. The senior  booted a left-footed shot inside the box for the early advantage.

Behrend had many opportunities to increase its lead, taking 11 shots in each half but Mackenzie Strubhar had a game-high nine saves including seven in the second half to keep the Lions scoreless after their first two goals.

Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) earned her seventh shutout with three saves on four shots.

Behrend returns to action on Tuesday at Hilbert. Game time is 1 p.m.
