Alfred State Edges Women's Swimming

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred State women's swimming and diving team edged Penn State Behrend 154-126 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday.

The Lions won 10 of the 16 events but the Pioneers had depth to pick up the dual-meet win.

Abigail Witmer (Herndon, VA/Herndon) and Gwendolyn Lowery (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) each tallied four wins on the day. Witmer, Lowery, Taylor Bean and Jessica Wyckoff (Elma, NY/Iroquois) won the opening 400 medley relay in 4:29.86.

Witmer also won the 100 backstroke (1:06.72) and the 200 backstroke (2:25.43). Lowery touched first in the 200 freestyle (2:06.59), the 100 butterfly (1:07.70) and the 200 IM (2:25.60).

In the 1000 freestyle, Lacey Grinnen (Warren, PA/Warren) won for Behrend with a time of 12:44.54.

Paola Maldonado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the 50 freestyle in 26.28 and then joined Wyckoff, Witmer and Devon van Rensburg (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford) for the winning 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.93.

Wyckoff paced the Lions in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall first in 58.18. Maldonado came in third in 1:00.06.

Bean picked up a three second-place finishes. She was runner up in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.52), the 200 breaststroke (2:55.74), and the 200 IM (2:40.32).

Behrend returns to action on Saturday in its home opener against Westminster. Meet begins at 2 p.m.
