Women's Swimming and Diving Falls Short at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team fell to Washington & Jefferson 139-108 in non-conference action on Saturday.

The Lions won four events, two of which were captured by Gwendolyn Lowery (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte). She won the 200 butterfly in 2:32.96 and the 200 IM in 2:23.19. Lowery also took second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.33) for the day. The final 200 freestyle relay consisting of Paola Maldonado (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Abigail Witmer (Herndon, VA/Herndon), Jessica Wyckoff (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Devon van Rensburg (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford). The team won in 1:49.45.

The other individual win went to Lacey Grinnen (Warren, PA/Warren). She touched first in 6:07.19 in the 500 freestyle. She was second in the 1000 freestyle (12:31.45), finishing less than a second shy of first. Grinnen also came in third in the 200 free (2:24.41).

Witmer, Lowery, Van Rensburg and Wyckoff also placed second in the 200 medley relay (2:04.55).

Wyckoff was also second in two individual events. She was runner up in the 200 freestyle (2:08.48) and later in the 100 freestyle (59.00).

In the backstroke events, Witmer was second in the 100 and 200 touching in 1:07.64 and 2:26.51, respectively.

Maldonado led Behrend in the 50 free, taking second in 26.36 and Grace Hu followed in third (27.08).

Van Rensburg was the top swimmer in the 100 breaststroke for the Lions with a third-place finish (1:26.53). She was also third in the 100 free (1:05.94).

Jessica Rettger (Bradford, PA/Bradford Area) came in behind Lowery in the 200IM (2:52.15) and then was also second in the 200 breaststroke (3:10.34).

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at Pitt-Bradford. Meet begins at 4 p.m.
