Lions Drop Heartbreaker to Chatham

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team fell to Chatham 9-8 in overtime on Friday afternoon at the Division III Championships.

After falling behind 3-1 early, the Lions (0-19) battled back with a 4-0 run to erase the deficit and take their first lead of the game.  MaryEllen Spooner (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) started the rally with her 32nd goal of the season.  Lindsay Musoleno (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) netted two in a row and suddenly Behrend was in front.

The lead grew to 5-3 after Emily Spicher (Falls Creek, PA/DuBois) found the back of the net, but Chatham answered with 26 seconds left to cut the gap to 5-4 at the break.

In the second half, the Lions continued to hold the momentum.  Behrend came out fast with three straight goals to double up the Cougars 8-4 with 3:41 remaining in the third.  However, it was Chatham who ended the game with a run of their own to earn the victory.  The Cougars scored the game's final five goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to stay in the winner's bracket.

Musoleno led the offense with four goals.  Spooner and Spicher each added two.  Elizabeth Causgrove (Erie, PA/McDowell) played well between the pipes with 10 saves.

The Lions will be back in the water today at 6 p.m.  Behrend will play the loser of Connecticut College and Macalster who play at 12:45 p.m.
