Women's Water Polo Falls Twice

LORETTO, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team fell to W&J 12-10 in overtime and then 16-7 against St. Francis on Saturday afternoon.

Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) scored seven goals in game one to pace the Lions (1-8) offense. Behrend held a 9-8 lead, but a late goal from the Presidents forced ovetime where the Lions were outscored 3-1.

Horn's big day started in the first quarter. W&J jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Horn responded with two straight goals to tie the game. The presidents jumped out to their largest lead of the game when they started the second quarter scoring two straight goals and making it 5-2 game. Alison McClure (Loveland, OH/Milford) and Horn teamed up for the next three goals, tying the game at 5-all.

After halftime, Claire Jeffreys (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) scored her only goal of the game to give the Lions its first lead of the day. The final three goals of the game were scored by Horn, bringing her total to seven.

Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) scored the first goal of the overtime period, giving Behrend a 10-9 lead. However, W&J scored three unanswered goals to finish the game.

In game two, the Red Flash exploded for nine first-half goals compared to just one goal from the Lions to help build a comfortable lead. Behrend added three goals in each the third and fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the large first-half deficit.

Jeffreys led the way on offense, recording a hat trick while Horn added two more goals of her own. Wood and Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) each added one.

Behrend will be back in the water next Friday at the CWPA Regional Tournament hosted by Connecticut College. They will face off against Monmouth in game one beginning at 1:40 p.m.
