Behrend Defeats Utica at CWPA Tournament

ST. PAUL, Mn. - The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team finished their season on a high note, defeating Utica, 7-4, at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship Tournament Sunday morning.

After the Pioneers scored the first goal of the game, the Lions responded with six straight goals to pull away as the game progressed. Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) and Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) each scored two goals in the first quarter to help pace the Behrend scoring attack.

Colleen Abanico (Mitilani, O'ahi, HI/Mitilani), who finished with two goals in the game, put the Lions on the board at the 2:51 mark of the opening eight minutes.

Hollyrae Hanson (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) and Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) split time in goal and recorded six and five saves each, respectively.

The scoring frenzy subsided in the second half, but the Behrend defense was able to hold off a Utica comeback.

Horn finished with three goals, two assists, and nine steals while Wood added a steal to go along with her two goals.
