Women's Water Polo Tops Grove City in CWPA Tournament

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team finished their season on a high note, defeating Grove City 10-5 at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship Tournament Sunday morning.

With this win over the Wolverines (5-9), the Lions (8-11) finish the year with the most wins in a season in program history.

Maryn Horn (Houston, TX/Jersey Village) and Devon Van Rensburg (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford) were instrumental in helping Behrend earn fifth place, each tabbing a hat-trick. Rensburg also added three steals and two drawn kickouts while Horn recorded two steals and two assists. 

Alison McClure (Loveland, OH/Milford), Angela Laier (Lansing, MI/Holt), JoJo Gager (Holland, MI/West Ottawa), and Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) all registered one goal in the game as well. Gager also posted three steals and dished out two assists.

Jenessa Islas-Parker (Palatine, IL/Frema) notched two steals and an assist while goalie Holly Rae Hanson (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) made 15 saves and tallied an assist in the victory.

In the third meeting of the season with Grove City, the Lions took control early and made sure they were going to end on top.

Two goals in the opening quarter of the contest gave Behrend a 2-0 advantage. After posting one more goal early in the second, the Wolverines got on the board with a goal of their own, making the score 3-1.

Just after Grove City's goal, Behrend turned on the burners. The Lions outscored the Wolverines 5-1 the remainder of the second period to hold a comfortable 8-2 at halftime.

Grove City added three goals in the second half, compared to Behrend two-goals, but it was not enough to overcome to deficit, ending the final score 10-5.
