Behrend Lions Set to Host 2009 AMCC Baseball Championship

For the second straight season the Behrend Lions (28-11) baseball program will be hosting the 2009 AMCC Baseball Championship on the Behrend diamond May 8-10.

Behrend captured its second straight AMCC regular season baseball title by virtue of a 16-2 record in regular season play and will be the number one seed, while Frostburg State (24-12, 15-3) is the two seed. Penn State Altoona (28-15, 12-6) and Pitt-Greensburg (19-17, 9-9) advanced in the first-round of the tournament enabling both winners to advance to the championship round at Penn State Behrend and enter as the third and fifth seed.

It took Altoona three games to defeat Pitt-Bradford, dropping the first contest 10-7, but the Lions bounced back for 3-1 and 16-8 wins to advance. Altoona will battle Frostburg State at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Greensburg upset Mt. Aloysius by scores of 7-4 and 18-5 and will face Behrend at noon on Friday. Game three on day one of the tournament will be an elimination game at 3:00 p.m. The day one winners will meet Saturday, May 9 at 11:00 a.m. followed by another elimination game at 2:00 p.m. Sunday's championship game is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. If game seven is needed it will feature the same teams that played in game six, thirty minutes following the previous game.

The winner of the Tournament will earn the AMCC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Behrend, the AMCC regular season champions dropped Bradford 9-8 in game seven to win the league title and move on to the NCAA Tournament while posting a 34-12 record. Behrend also hosted the AMCC Tournament in 2002 and 2003.
