The 2009 ABCA-Rawlings Mid-Atlantic All-Region Baseball Team was announced yesterday with three Behrend Lions players earning recognition.

The Behrend Lions program completed another strong season on the diamond. Behrend registered a 31-13 record, a year after earning a 34-12 mark, and captured its second straight AMCC regular season and conference tournament titles. The blue and white also have appeared in two consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

Junior Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) is making his third straight appearance on the all-region squad and was named to the second team for the second consecutive year as was senior pitcher David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic). Junior outfielder Jon Gray (State College/State College) made the third team.

Fyffe continues to post strong offensive numbers from the shortstop position. As a leader on both sides of the ball, he was tops on the team in hits (69), doubles (13), home runs (9), total bases (115). He also established a new school record for single season RBI with 57. Fyffe, a First Team All-AMCC player, was also named to the all-league squad for a third straight season.

Koerbel is the most heralded pitcher in Behrend history. He recently helped the program completing the winningist four-year period in program history after he led the Behrend Lions in wins (9-1), strike-outs (83), and opponent average (.240). Koerbel was selected for the second straight season as the AMCC Pitcher of the Year.

Gray has earned back-to-back All-AMCC First Team honors in consecutive seasons and led the blue and white in several offensive categories from the lead off spot. He led Behrend in batting average (.432), runs scored (59), hit-by-pitches (17), on-base percentage (.544), and was second in hits (67) and walks (22).
