Behrend Lions Open AMCC With Sweep of Penn State Altoona

The Penn State Behrend Lions began their 2010 AMCC season today with a convincing sweep over Penn State Altoona.  The Behrend Lions took game one by a score of 6-1 while defeating Altoona in the second, 13-5.

Game one saw little action through the first three innings as both teams were getting adjusted to the weather and field conditions.  The Behrend Lions broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth when Kyle Kline (Clearfield/Clearfield) got it started with a single up the middle.  Ryan Geibel (East Butler/Butler) would later double to score Kline and put the blue and white up a run.  The Behrend Lions' sixth inning was the key as they managed to put up four runs and put the game out of reach.  Jon Gray (State College/State College), Dustin Dubensky (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) and Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) all contributed RBI's in the sixth.  Senior lefty Steve Miller (Union City/Union City) tossed a great game going six innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out seven.

The second game saw more runs scored and more action throughout the contest.  Altoona would strike quickly as they pounded out four hits and put two early runs on the board in the first.  Behrend would answer right back with three runs in the first to put the blue and white up one run early.  Ed Kessler (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) would walk and Fyffe would double to score him.  Ryan Liddle (DuBois/DuBois) would add an RBI single to finish off the Behrend Lions first inning.  Fyffe would go onto add another double in the fifth and Dubensky would match that with a two RBI single of his own.  Fran Haus (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) would start the game and go three innings before Ken Farnsworth (State College/State College) would take over.  Farnsworth would provide a solid two innings of work and allow zero runs on just two hits.  Liddle would finish with three hits along with Fyffe while Gray would add two as well.

The blue and white are now 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the AMCC.  Next up for the Behrend Lions will be another home conference doubleheader against the Pitt-Bradford Panthers on Tuesday, March 30.
