Wolverines Clip Lions In ECAC Championship

ASTON, Pa. –The No. 2 Penn State Behrend baseball team ended their season with a tough 3-1 loss to No. 4 Grove City, Sunday in the ECAC Championship game after beating No. 3 La Roche, 7-5 earlier that evening.

Blake Pavlik was the hero of game one, the left fielder batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to help his squad advance in the tournament and become the winningest senior class in school history.

Harry Latta also had a couple of RBIs in the game-one win. In the second inning, Latta singled up the middle to score two runs and gave the Lions (28-12) a 3-1 lead.

At the top of the fourth, the Redhawks (27-15) who fell to Behrend, 13-10 just last week in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Playoffs, came storming back. La Roche amounted three runs on two hits to take a 5-4 lead.

Each team would remain scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Geoff Lang hit a RBI double to tie. Lang then scored the game-winning run thanks to a Pavlik single, 7-5.

Ryan Zamiskie started the game for the Lions and was relieved in the fourth inning after giving up four hits and five runs (four earned). Jay Condit earned the win after throwing for 4.1 innings and allowing two hits. Chad Zurat picked up the save, his fourth of the season.

In a disappointing game two, the Lions (28-13) were held from a championship trophy for the second time this year. In the nine-inning ball game, Behrend hit .129 (4-for-31) and fell to Grove City, 3-1.

Ryan Jacobs and Mike Moyer each saw time on the mound for the Lions. Jacobs recorded the loss despite the strong pitching performance through seven innings. The sophomore gave up two earned runs on six hits and struck out five.

After watching the Lions take a 1-0 lead in the second, the Wolverines (25-16) tacked on runs in the third, seventh and eighth innings en route to the 2011 ECAC Championship title, 3-1.
