Big First Inning Powers Presidents Past Lions

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson Presidents scored seven runs in the first inning en route to defeating the Penn State Behrend baseball team 14-5 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.

The Presidents tallied 14 hits to earn their second victory of the season.

After falling behind 7-0 after one inning, the Lions (4-5) were unable to put enough offense together to get back into the game.  Dante DeSantis (DuBois, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) led Behrend with two doubles and two RBIs.

In the second, third, and sixth, Behrend was able to put up single runs but Washington and Jefferson answered with runs of their own to keep the momentum.

Ryan Kragnes (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park), Ryan Geibel (East Butler, PA/Butler), Vinny Rice (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley), Jordan Weinzierl (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys), and Matt Bittner (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) each contributed one hit apiece.  Geibel and Weinzierl tallied one RBI each with Matt DiDiano (Export, PA/Franklin Regional) driving in one as well.

Matt Parnes (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and Connor Semple (Washington, PA/McGuffey) each came out of the pen to pitch one and two innings of scoreless relief respectively.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday at Muskingum for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
