CRESSON, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team defeated Mt. Aloysius 6-2 in game one of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Game two ended in a 4-4 tie after eight full innings.
In the opener, the Lions (12-6-1) got off to a fast start with a two-out two-run home run by Ryan Geibel (East Butler, PA/Butler) in the top of the first. After the Mounties answered with one of their own, Behrend led 2-1 after two innings.
In the third, Evan Bukowski (Washington, PA/Trinity) and Matt Bittner (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) hit back-to-back doubles. Geibel followed with another two-out hit to put the Lions up 4-1. Mt. Aloysius came back with another run to cut the deficit to 4-2 after four innings.
Vinny Rice (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) scored an insurance run in the sixth for Behrend helping to push the lead to 6-2.
Dante DeSantis (DuBois, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) got the win for the Lions on the mound. Chad Zurat (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) got a crucial strikeout with the bases load in the fifth to get Behrend out of a jam. Zurat threw the final two innings of the game and did not allow a run to earn the save.
Bukowski, Geibel, and James Verona (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) led the way for the Lions with two hits apiece.
Game two of the doubleheader finished in a 4-all tie. After eight innings, the game was called due to darkness.
Behrend's next scheduled game is Tuesday. The Lions will host Pitt-Bradford at 1 p.m.
